The Cast of Characters

I am Lily.  Ok, not really, but it's probably best we not use anyone's real name here!  I was a single mother for a long time, then recently married my high school sweetheart.  Let's call him Albert, shall we?

We have what I call a mixed marriage.  He is a conservative, Hispanic, Catholic Yankee.  I am a liberal, WASP from the South.  We actually met in Germany, so it probably goes without saying that we are military brats.  His best friend from high school (who first introduced us so many years ago) found me on Facebook and reconnected us.  We both feel very lucky...most days :)

My son is a great kid, but I guess most moms feel that way.  Boo (obviously not his real name, either!) was born a perfectly wonderful, healthy kid.  Shortly after his second birthday, his teachers at day care shared with me their concern that he might be hearing impaired.  He was not very verbal and often did not respond to them.  I pretty much figured he was ignoring me at home, and had not given it much thought.  Long story short: his hearing checked out fine, but after several months of testing was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified.  For those of you lucky enough to not know what that is, it is on the autism spectrum.  Later, his diagnosis was changed to Asperger's syndrome.

Thanks to many years of intervention, great doctors, and teachers that I consider to be gifts from God, Boo is now a high school senior, is taking a heavy course load, making great grades, and will be going to college next year.  He is even expected to live in the dorms.  The journey we have made over the past 15 years will be the subject of many posts.
